VASTA KOHTA* -klubi is a recurrent art club in the 84-year-old public Sauna Arla, located in the district of Kallio. It’s a space for performance arts, social discussion and collective city culture.

Sauna lectures (performances in the heat of sauna) are in the core of the clubs. They revise the Finnish tradition of combining political discussions with sauna culture. Artists, intellects, social mover-shakers and other current people are invited to the benches to share their thoughts, beliefs and point of views. The lecturers will be challenged by opponents or fellow lecturers. Besides the lectures and discussions in the sauna, the club presents performative comments by artists, musicians and other performers from different artistic backgrounds.

Although, the club acts in Finnish, the events, the heat, the atmosphere, speech, tones, sounds, gestures, smells, sweating - the whole bodily experience is reachable also for the non-Finnish participants.

VASTA KOHTA -klubi is based on the sauna lecture concept by choreographer and curator Satu Herrala. Since 2011 series of sauna lectures have been experienced six times and in four different countries at international performing arts festivals. Sauna lectures were launched in Sauna Arla already in 2012 at Baltic Circle International Theatre Festival.

The VASTA KOHTA club series was opened in 3rd of December 2013 by theatre artist and writer Juha Hurme. Only a couple of days before Finland’s Independence Day, he told a story of David Europaeus, challenging the Finnish culturohistorical myths. Europaeus (1820−1884) was a cultural rebel of his era. In the sauna lecture, Hurme opened Europaeus’ thinking and compared it to the dominant understandings of both our era and 19th century. Laura Kolbe, professor of European history (Helsinki University), challenged Hurme’s lecture and invited everyone in the sauna to the discussion. During the break kantele (Finnish zither) musician Eija Kankaanranta gave her performative comment on the discussion.
